M-I-Z, Net-work-ing!

It's Homecoming here at Mizzou - meaning skits, philanthropy and tailgating are on everyone's mind. But, with this year's centennial anniversary, don't forget about one of the biggest perks of the season: alumni networking.

While it seems nearly every event held at the Missouri School of Journalism is an effort to rub elbows and make contacts, Homecoming week offers a few unique opportunities:

Career Fair - Thursday, Oct. 13
Stotler Ballroom, Memorial Union
9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

You've probably seen the announcements about the journalism job fair happening today, but if not, grab your résumé and head over (in business attire, of course). At least 12 journalism-related organizations will be there, including:
  • Fleishman-Hillard
  • k-Cura
  • American Junior Golf Association
  • CGX Consolidated Graphics
  • Vital Voice Media
  • Crain Communications
  • Huffington Post
  • U.S. Marines
  • Turner Broadcasting
  • Plattform Advertising
  • Patch Media

Newsy Open House - Thursday, Oct. 13
Newsy Office (904 Elm Street)
5 p.m.

Newsy, a multi-source news organization, will hold an open house for visitors to see the office and meet the Newsy staff! If you're not familiar with Newsy, check out its website or Twitter page.

School of Journalism Open Houses
All Day

The Missouri School of Journalism will be home to a variety of open houses, from 8 a.m. story meetings in RJI to tours of KOMU and other journalism school facilities. Check out the full list of activities on the Missouri Journalism School website. While these open houses are targeted towards alumni, they could be a good chance to network and make contacts.

Real World Lunch - Friday, Oct. 14
12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

The Real World Homecoming Lunch is an lunch-and-chat event for Mizzou journalism alumni and current journalism students held by Jen Lee Reeves and her capstone class. The whole idea is to discuss journalism, journalism jobs and anything related while networking over lunch. You can find out more about the event from the Real World Lunch blog.

If you plan to eat pizza at the event, be sure to RSVP on the Eventbrite page and Facebook event!

Nervous about getting into the networking ring? #wjchat, a weekly chat discussion for journalists, has a great conversation all about networking. There's some great tips from those in the field about how to network, what to take with you and what employers are looking for when you give your "hire me!" pitch.
